CPM makes a histtoric change: in policies Kerala permits private universities, saying they must adapt to stay in business. Three decades after five DYFI employees were killed during demonstrations against the UDF government’s decision to open up the higher education sector, the LDF government approves a bill in this regard. The CPI(M) is getting ready to welcome private universities to Kerala, thirty years after a bloody protest against the opening of the higher education sector. A draft bill on the establishment of private universities in the state was approved by the state government, which is led by the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Professor R Bindu, the state minister of higher education and leader of the CPI(M), defended the decision by stating that “if we wish to survive in the highly competitive scenario, we must adapt to changes in our globalized society.”
